July 2018: Tribute to Patrick Sweeney, Superintendent NVUSD
Happy trails, Patrick
This month we would like to pay tribute to Patrick Sweeney, Napa Valley Unified School District’s outgoing superintendent.
A remarkable legacy
Under Patrick’s leadership, NVUSD has made significant strides. He built partnerships that helped NVUSD weather the Great Recession and come out stronger. NapaLearns was one of those partners and we worked together with him on a number of different initiatives.
Through his partnership with NapaLearns, Patrick leaves behind a strong legacy:
• Investment in teacher professional development, technology infrastructure, and putting technology in the hands of students to instill more joy in learning.
• Expansion of project-based learning (PBL) from Napa New Tech High to 12 additional schools in the district. PBL allows teachers to bring real-world skills into engaging projects.
• The vision and programs that prepare students for college and careers with equitable access and opportunities for all. More students are graduating from high school and are prepared for college, growing from 75% in 2010 to 92% in 2017.
As a result, big gains have been made in NVUSD: In 2006, 23% of students qualified for CSU and UCs; now more than half (51%) qualify.
The NapaLearns board and staff wish Patrick all the best and we look forward to continuing the work that’s been started with the new superintendent, Dr. Rosanna Mucetti, this fall.
Happy trails, Patrick.
Patrick Sweeney has led @Napa Valley Unified School District for the past 8 years and we are so proud to have worked with him to transform education at NVUSD.
